GRANTEE: PFLAG set to establish first African American/Black Chapter in Portland

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Oregon State Council, PFLAG Portland, Unity Project of Oregon (UPO) and Basic Rights Oregon (BRO) will establish the first Black/ African- American chapter in Oregon. This will be PFLAG Oregon State Council’s first ever paid position made possible through the support of the McKenzie River Gathering Foundation, PFLAG National’s Families of Color outreach initiative and Equity Foundation.

“By building an African American/Black PFLAG chapter, we at PFLAG and UPO plan to support the leadership of the African American community to create a safe space where the unique experiences of families and allies with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender loved ones can be addressed,” states Teri Noble, PFLAG Oregon State Council Coordinator.

August To assist the organization in its formation we are excited to announce the hire of community organizer Inger McDowell. Inger comes to this position with excellent credentials including five years as a community organizer for a statewide coalition in Nevada, where she helped with the formation of gay/straight alliances, held a position for two years on the board of the only GLBTQ organization in Reno, Nevada, and has over two years working here in Portland with the American Federation of Teachers Healthcare Division and the Service Employees International Union.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Inger on board for this ground-breaking work,” says Noble.

Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is the nation’s foremost family-based organization committed to the civil rights of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender persons. Founded in 1973 by mothers and fathers, PFLAG has 200,000 members and supporters in more than 500 chapters throughout the United States.

Equity Foundation Announces $80,000 in Grants Statewide.

Every six months Equity Foundation pumps tens of thousands of dollars into local Oregon communities because of the foundation’s efforts in twenty Workplace Giving Campaigns such as Kaiser Permanente and the State of Oregon. This month, Equity Foundation will disburse over $80,000 to 57 organizations in Oregon. Equity Foundation is pleased to offer funding to organizations like Planned Parenthood of SW Oregon-Medford, PFLAG of Linn & Benton Counties, Our House of Portland, and many others statewide. Workplace Giving Campaigns offer employees a choice to give to approved organizations through payroll deductions. Essentially, Equity Foundation administers these grants for grantees to provide them with funding from pooled smaller donations from around the state.

Within the Workplace Giving Program, Equity Foundation is known for providing the largest and most diverse list of organizations throughout Oregon from which to choose in these campaigns. Considering that most funds and federations that participate in these campaigns only offer about 30 total organizations for employees, this is an amazing list that proves Equity Foundation’s determination to assist organizations throughout Oregon.
